What a difference an hour makes

May 20, 2013 - 5:18 pm 1 Comment

We had a very good night last night. The Fire Creek campground was very quiet and pretty. We left early because we wanted to make 350 miles today, which is a lot for us.

We’ve seen several deer which have been killed on the highway. Lots of deer in this area, and very pretty farmlands. We didn’t have any rain today but the skies were threatening most of the day. The temperature this morning was so warm that we wore shorts to begin the day. We bypassed large cities like Toledo, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw.

We crossed the 45th parallel which is exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole (near Gaylord, Michigan).

OK, so I’m not a big fan of crossing bridges, especially over big masses of water. Well here comes the Mackinaw Bridge, which crosses over Lake Michigan. The winds picked up, the temperature plummeted, and we crossed the third largest suspension bridge in the world, after passing a blinking sign which said “HIGH WINDS, RVs SHOULD CROSS ONLY DRIVING 20 MPH”. You know I’m so happy about my first sight of Lake Michigan. Winds howling, the bridge is moving, the water crashing into the bridge, and we are driving across the 6 mile span going 20 mph. OK, I’m NOT HAPPY……

We made it across—– I won’t be doing that again!! The temperature dropped from 84 degrees to 50 degrees within a 30 mile span. We checked into the KOA park in the pouring rain. Greg is asking what fun thing do I have planned next.

We had originally planned to take the ferry over to Mackinaw Island, but unless the weather improves drastically, we’ll just continue on our route to Canada.

Seriously, we’ve had a good day and we are settled for the evening. For dinner we had talapia, baked potato, and salad.

Still having trouble posting photos but will try again tomorrow. Thanks for dropping by.

Trying to settle into blogging

May 19, 2013 - 4:10 pm 1 Comment

Just a note to tell you I’m having difficulties figuring out the particulars of blogging with my IPAD. Do I use the WordPress app, or use WordPress on the Internet? My first two entries are all over the place with photos outside the blog. I’ve lost three photos (one was dinner tonight) and I’m struggling to get comfortable with it. Hopefully in a couple of days I should have figured it out.

Thanks for your patience.

Three Days to the “groove” Sunday, May 19, 2013

May 19, 2013 - 3:04 pm No Comments

Wow! Starting a new trip is very disorienting. Actually, if our sons had a peek at us yesterday while we were on the road, they probably would have asked us to come home. It was a day full of “where is my wallet”, “where are the keys”, etc. We got out at a rest stop to walk, and we chuckled at the thought of the boys listening in. It generally takes us three days to get in the groove —today was better than yesterday, and tomorrow will be better still.

It was very foggy this morning when we awoke, but by the time we hit the road around 9:30 am, the fog was mostly gone and we didn’t have a drop of rain all day. We stop at most all rest stops so we can walk around and we are set up for the evening near Bowling Green, Ohio, which is about 30 miles south of Toledo. We will drive to St. Ignace, Michigan, tomorrow, which is where we will stay for a few days so we can visit Mackinaw Island.

Our campground tonight is the Fire Lake RV Park near Bowling Green, Ohio. It’s a very nice little park situated around a small lake. The temperature is in the high 80s today, but tomorrow we expect the high to be in the mid 60s. We look forward to the cooler temperatures as we travel into Canada.
