The Grace of the Amish

October 6, 2012 - 10:08 am No Comments

We have really enjoyed our visit to the Amish country in Lancaster, PA. We have seen beautiful farmland where families work in the field together. We’ve had a couple of wonderful meals at Amish Restaurants. Our campground is one of the best we have ever enjoyed. Our campsite is very large, and we have met such nice people who are camping here. You’ll see a couple of photos of an Amish buggy with baked goods on it. This is the Amish Pie Wagon that comes through the park in the evenings on the weekend. While the wife drives the buggy, the husband walks
behind the buggy ringing a bell to let us know they are in the area. You should see all the goodies!!! We bought a pie called “fruit from the forest” pie. It was made of strawberries, rhubarb, blackberries, raspberries, all sorts of berries. Of course the crust was homemade as well. Delicious!!! We stopped by a farmers market and bought some beautiful produce direct from the garden. Broccoli, corn, etc, will be part of our dinner this evening. I’m still working on getting the photos set up—–but hope you get an idea of our campground and the area around us.  Tomorrow we’ll head south toward the Skyline Drive. We plan on spending the night in Luray, Virginia, on Sunday night.

Four states in eight hours

We decided last night to drive to Lancaster, PA, since we would be so close to it when we start driving the Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah Valley.  We are in the Olde Mill Stream RV Park in Lancaster.   Great campground!!!

We have rented a car for Thursday and Friday to do some sightseeing. Then we will spend Saturday on the campground, doing laundry, reading, etc.   Sunday we will turn south for the beginning of the Skyline Drive.

Oh!   The four states we drove through today are Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

A Rocky Start

We knew when we started our trip yesterday morning we would be in for a day of rain. But it never occurred to us the amount of rain we would see before morning. We decided to stay in Maggie Valley for the night. When we went to bed we thought it would be nice to listen to the rain hitting the roof but there was so much rain we couldn’t sleep. We awoke this morning around 6 AM and looked out the window and the creek behind our motorhome was just about to overflow. When we went to bed last night it was probably 3 feet lower than it was this morning. The water was rushing by so fast it really looked like a raging river.

We decided to get up at 6 AM, get packed and leave for higher ground. By 7 AM we were sitting in the parking lot of Joey’s Pancake House. In the pouring rain we got out of the motorhome and went inside for breakfast.

After breakfast we regrouped about where we were going. We decided to try the Blueridge parkway. After only a few miles on the parkway we realized we would not be able to go farther due to fog and inclement weather. So we turned around and went back down to Maggie Valley and made our way to Asheville North Carolina where we stopped at the visitor center.

We decided at that time to make our way around the western side of the parkway going north to get out of the weather. So we spent the rest of the day driving north on I 81 toward Pennsylvania. We have decided to go to Lancaster Pennsylvania and see the Amish country and then turn south and start on the north end of the Shenandoah Valley toward the Blueridge parkway. We are reversing the direction of our trip in hopes of better weather.

Also I’m trying to use my IPad so please bear with me while I learn all the tricks of using it. I’ll download a couple of photos of our campsite tonight in the Fort Chisom RV Park in Wytheville, Virginia.
